The students participating from 4 different schools presented their speech about different drinking water Point of Use (PoU) options particularly chlorination, boiling, filtration and Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) technique at the programme. Among them, four students were selected as the winner in four different categories. Reshu Shrestha from Shree Shanti Secondary School was awarded in Bio-Sand Filter category, Pramod Sunuwar won the award in SODIS category where as award in Chlorination category went to Karishma Rawot and Colloidal Siver Filter category to Sangeeta Aalemagar of Kumbheshowr Primary School.

Kathmandu, 18 June 2010 – UNIC Kathmandu travelled through a dirt road for three hours to reach to the top of a mountain in Timal at a height of 2100 meter above sea level in a village called Pokhari Maisthan in Sindhupalchowk district, 75 kms from capital Kathmandu to meet with some 200 women. The purpose was to distribute UN publications to women representatives of 30 wards who had come from 7 villages walking several hours. The women of the seven VDC have formed community libraries in their respective areas as an adult education campaign with the assistance of a non governmental organization called Sathsathai with the cooperation of a team of volunteers from the Neatherlands. UNIC Kathmandu collected a sizeable number of UN publications, all in Nepali, from various UN agencies based in Nepal and distributed them to the women of Timal amid a function on 18 June 2010. UNIC National Information Officer Ram Babu Shah addressed the function highlighting aspects of MDGs related to women’s education and health. He also briefed them about the Commemoration of 10 years of Security Council Resolution 1325 in Nepal in the form of the “Open Day on Women and Peace’ which was held on June 11, 2010.

Kathmandu, 27 May: UNIC, Kathmandu celebrated International Observance of the Day of Vesak on 27 May 2010 in the UN Conference Hall in association with the International Institute of Buddhist Studies Nepal.
The function was addressed by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNIC Director Mr. Robert Piper, Chairperson of the International Institute of Buddhist Studies Nepal Mr. Prem Lal Chitrakar and leading Nepalese Monks and Nuns.
