UN Trainees mark International Youth Day

KATHMANDU, 28 August 2012 — he UN Youth Trainees placed in various UN agencies celebrated International Youth Day 2012, in cooperation with UN Information Centre (UNIC), in the UN Conference Hall. The programme was marked with a half day event consisting of two short impressive drama staged by the trainees themselves and by a youth group led by Ram Babu Regmi depicting the challenges faced by youths in Nepal which covered issues of unemployment, drug abuse, migration, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and gender discrimination.

On the occasion, the youths were also engaged in an interaction programme and panel discussion on “ Involvement of Youth in Local and National Governance” involving the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr. Shantiram Sharma, youth activist Pradip Pariyar and youth expert from UNFPA Babu Ram Pant.
The United Nations in Nepal has been organizing UN Traineeship program since 2011 to capacitate the dynamic youths of marginalized communities to support the development of their professional skills. This year, as a second batch of trainees, UN has received 22 UN Trainees who are deployed in different UN agencies.
Each year on August 12, UN has been marking International Youth Day. The theme for 2012 is “Building a Better World, Partnering with Youth”.
